Vesta International Masters Head

Mar 23, 2025

The Vesta International Masters Head took place on Sunday with 277 entries. 240 crews were placed and one crew rowed for time only, but the race had to be abandoned with crews on the course as there was a medical emergency and the RNLI lifeboat was called out. Sadly the competitor involved in the emergency later died in hospital and our condolences go out to those concerned.

One unfortunate knock-on effect for Quintin was that crew 149, our Open Masters H crew, happened to be approaching Chiswick Pier when the RNLI set off at a lick of speed, swamping our boat with their wash and stopping it in its tracks, leaving two “cockpits” filled to the runners with water. Despite this the crew put in the club’s fastest time of 21 min. 21.52 sec. which, when adjusted for handicap, left them just 0.53 seconds behind the Bedford/Star G crew who took the Masters G/H handicap pennant. Such is life! The crew still finished a creditable 73rd overall.

The crew: Huw Jones (bow), Graham Bagnall, Slavo Radosevic, Jonathan Ferris, Fred Jefferies, Andy Tompkins, Geoff Peel, Ian Hyslop (stroke), Jane Adams (cox).

Crew 118, our Open Masters E eight, had a solid row and completed the course in 21 min. 41.56 sec, finishing 10th in category and 94th overall.

The crew: Laurence Kurzner (bow), James Spicer, Mark O’Brien, Marc Fleury, David Allen, Ken Creighton, Simon Hunt, Simon Wood (stroke), Sune Keyser (cox).

Our two Mixed Masters crews, both in the DEF handicap category, had a battle with each other, crew 174 overtaking 172 at about Chiswick Pier.

Crew 172: Abigail Klapp (bow), Millie Dutto, Inkeri Abbotts, Roberta Gargiulo, Dave Thomas, Maurizio Conza, Gary Mills, Mike Harris (stroke), Rita Parekh-Patel (cox).Crew 174: Ainslie Rimmer (bow), Devlin Lindeque, Benedicte Weir, Yan Tordoff, Andy Reynolds, Kirsty Russell-Duff, Lorna Anderson, Polly Atkinson (stroke), Jose Cotera (cox).
