Alec Field RIP

Oct 1, 2026

We have learned the sad news that Alec Field, a former member of the club, has died aged 88. Alec joined the club in 1960 and was active both in a boat and in the clubroom up until his departure to live in New Zealand in 2000. Starting his rowing career as a novice, coached by Arthur “Bubbles” Ward, Alec worked his way up the club hierarchy to row in the 1st VIII in 1967, finishing 11th in the Head of the River Race. Alec rowed in many veteran crews throughout the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, usually in the stroke seat of an eight. His last known competitive outing for the club was to take part in the Rund am Wannsee Race in Berlin in October 1999.

In New Zealand Alec continued to follow the club’s fortunes via our website, contributing a number of photographs to the photo gallery and providing quite a few snippets of information relating to other images in the gallery. His enthusiasm for the club will be sorely missed.
