We sadly report the death of another ex-member of the club. Hugh Williams died on Saturday, 24th May after a long struggle against cancer. Hugh graduated from Christ’s College, Cambridge in 1970, where he also rowed for his college. Then in 1975 Hugh joined Quintin, having previously been a member of Marlow Rowing Club. He was part of the club’s elite development squad in 1976 which won Elite eights at Hammersmith, Twickenham and Monmouth regattas, and won Elite B eights at Wallingford and Chiswick. Hugh was not in the crew for all of these races but our photographic evidence shows that he was in the winning crews at Hammersmith and Wallingford. Hugh was in the Quintin eight that represented Townmead Rowing Club in the Thames Cup at Henley Royal Regatta that same year. Shortly afterwards Hugh transferred to Tideway Scullers School, rowing and sculling for his new club well into the 21st century. He did, however, return to Quintin colours in 1988 when he was part of a squad of youngish veterans led by Jock Wishart which competed at the World Masters Regatta at Strathclyde Country Park in Scotland.
Members and ex-members from that era will remember Hugh for his polite and charming personality.
In this photograph Hugh is at 3 in the winning Elite B eight at Wallingford in 1976.
