Veteran Fours Head

Nov 16, 2025

The club had six quad sculls and three coxless fours racing in the Vet Fours Head on Sunday plus an interest in a coxed four composite with Bruce Lamka and his Ancient Mariners from Seattle, USA (coxed by our Ellie Paterson), and Tom Bishop’s composite quad scull with Colin Barratt of Ardingly, Lee Brown of Upper Thames and Bob Milligan of Poplar B & D.

Tom’s quad won the Masters I category, beating the Tideway Scullers School Masters F quad by a tenth of a second!

Our G quad and G coxless four and also the American composite G coxed four were all, in practice, H category crews, but as they were the only entries in that age group the organisers merged them into the G category without offering a handicap. Under these circumstances they did pretty well. The coxless four in particular had a tough time, suffering a major clash with Exeter RC, who pushed them into the inshore zone (to avoid further clashes). Without this incident they might well have won the G pennant.

Our crews all enjoyed the competition, but there is plenty of room for improvement and no room for complacency. Some sympathy goes to the Open F quad scull who, it is understood, were seriously underboated and had trouble clearing their sculls in the Tideway conditions.

Our results are summarised in the following table and the full provisional results may be found at https://alge-results.com/event/9492af9a-6aa6-4635-a209-03049cdfb837/live.
