Our annual plum puddings race was held on Sunday, followed by a Christmas party. There were 22 crews listed to take part in the race but unfortunately Paul Gunn’s scratch coxless four encountered steering problems on their way to the start and decided not to risk it, leaving seven eights, thirteen quads and a coxless four to battle it out over the three mile course from the Pink House to the club. There were seven crews from MAABC, one from Tideway Scullers (with Dov Ohrenstein wearing his Quintin racing colours), with the remaining crews from the host club.
The now-standard format was for the (anticipated) faster crews to go off first in a time trial, but with the prize winners determined by a sealed handicap, devised, as usual, by Malcolm Cook. This year’s winners were the Quintin women’s eight steered by Jose Cotera, who completed the course in an unadjusted time of 18 minutes and 35 seconds. In second place were Juliet Cassidy’s Supernova quad in 18 minutes and 1 second and in third equal place after handicapping were MAABC’s Wild quad and Sean Pitt’s eight, coxed by Jane Adams. The fastest crew overall was the Wild quad in an unadjusted time of 15 minutes and 47 seconds.
